“The Hunt” Minimate eBay Auctions

“The Hunt” Minimate Exclusive. Pic from eBay.

By Fujis

“The Hunt”, as I’m sure all Minimate fans know by now, was a huge picture-scavenger hunt sponsored by Diamond Select Toys which was held during this year’s San Diego Comic Con. As I understand it (and for those that were there please correct me if I’m wrong) but each team that registered was given one “Hunt” Minimate (pictured above) to use in their pictures and it had to be turned in with the rest of the teams materials before the deadline…and yet they are starting to show up on eBay.

It’s not that I mind though, unless the price goes over $50 that is, eBay is the only resort for someone like me that couldn’t be at the con. But I wonder if people registered for the contest with the intention of simply turning around and selling their “Hunt” exclusive and also if DST possibly handed some out as retailer exclusives as well, seeing as two such sellers have a couple currently for sale.

Whatever the case may be, it seems strange that DST would put so much work into an exclusive Minimate and not sell it or give it away at the convention.

*Edit: And just as soon as I wrote this article Shanester over at the MMMV has announced that DST will be sponsoring a give-away of a few of “The Hunt” Minimate Exclusives! Stay tuned to the Multiverse for more details and thanks to Shanester, the MMMV, and DST!

Hunt Recap Part 2

Posted on Monday 30 July 2007

By Jatta Pake

The Hunt winners have been announced.  I’m told the winner of the Hunt contest was a woman who beat everyone by at least 50 points.  The other winners won for best single photo as judged by DST.  These two included Ivan and the MMMV team of TBT, Nervous, and Shanester.

I won’t hide my disappointment in losing the Hunt.  My brother and I completed every item except the “Staking a vampire” and “Eating actual brains” pictures which put us 11 points down from the total.  To win by 50 points, the woman had to have done EVERYTHING plus garnered bonus points by getting a picture with over 30+ people in stormtrooper costumes posing for a single photo with her.

If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn’t.  The Hunt consumed a lot of money and nearly all of my time at SDCC.  Fighting the crowds, stench, and everything else was completely draining.  I had to turn in my Hunt Minimate when I turned in my kit, so I don’t even have Adventure Man anymore.  They did let us keep the T-shirts.

I’ll stop my whiney, sour grapes post now.  If and when the mood strikes, I’ll upload more pictures.  But I need to set aside the Minimates hobby for now.  I’m way too busy to devote any more time or energy to this.

Congratulations to the winners.

Hunt Recap Part 1

Posted on Sunday 29 July 2007

By Jatta Pake

My brother and I turned in our bag of Hunt items at 4pm yesterday.  The deadline was 5pm so we made it just in time.  Without sharing too much of my personal life, a few people already know that my wife and I are renewing our wedding vows next Sunday (we never had the big wedding).  So I need to get back to LA to get things taken care of.  So this post will again be short, but I’ve uploaded some fun pics.  Enjoy and more later!

More pics later.  I hope you enjoy!

Short Update

Posted on Saturday 28 July 2007

By Jatta Pake

I’m struggling to find the time to provide updates here at Minimate Headquarters, with Minimates news coming fast and furious from all directions.  The massive crowds alone make it very difficult to go anywhere at SDCC, and today is sold-out.

I have a ton of stories and I will share in due time.  Right now, I have to figure out how to take some silly Minimates Hunt pictures.

It was already shared at the Minimate Multiverse that the Target Exclusive wave will not be happening after all.  Target elected to devote shelf space to another product besides Minimates for now.  I know this really disappoints fans, but the good news is that Diamond Select Toys really wants to get these out to fans and they are looking at other venues or rolling them into upcoming waves.  A lot of money and production costs have already been invested in these figures and DST wants to make this happen.

I will share more news with you all later, but I wanted to say that the Fan Meeting was joined by Chuck from DST, and he was very candid about Minimates.  I hit him with a lot of burning fan questions and he answered with a tremendous amount of detail.  I left the fan meeting feeling fantastic about the future of Minimates despite some recent bumps in the road.

The Hunt Begins!

Posted on Thursday 26 July 2007

By Jatta Pake

It has been a full and exhausting day for JP and DragonYoung.  Battling the massive crowds at SDCC is extremely draining.  I was able to pick up Battlestar Galactica Wave 2 from the AFX booth.  I will have more pics up of these later.

The First Annual Minimate Hunt kicked off at exactly 5:00pm with a small crowd of about 10 teams present.  I am sure more registered later.  We were the third team in line to register and get our packet and Hunt Mate.  I’ve obscured the checklist above because of the competition, but you can see the Hunt Mate.  We do have to turn it back in at the end of the competition though.  We are calling him “Adventure Man” while he is with us.

The competition will be tough because the tasks are hard!  But they will be a lot of fun to complete.  Wish us luck!

I will try to get another post up later tonight answering some questions people have.  For now, I need to get some dinner in the Gas Lamp district!

JP and DragonYoung’s Preview Night Recap

Posted on Thursday 26 July 2007

By Jatta Pake

As last night’s pictures show, Jatta Pake and DragonYoung managed to beat Los Angeles traffic and make it to the San Diego Comic Convention’s Preview Night.  And what a night!

Marvel was the clear break-out star of Diamond Select Toys Minimate display with upcoming series jam packed with fan favorites including Hawkeye and Vision.  The upcoming Marvel waves seem to abandoned the traditional “theme” basis for character selection and instead sprinkled in a little love for everybody.  Series 19 and 20 see X-Men, Avengers, Spider-Man, and Hulk favorites.  I can’t help but wonder if the new format has anything to do with the wildly successful DC Minimates line, which also attempts to diversify the character selection.  Whatever the reason, fans are sure to rejoice at this change.

SDCC is an overwhelming experience; people are rushing around in every direction, massive displays announce the major media companies, and flat panel HD televisions flash the latest video games and movies.  And freebies abound!  Everywhere you turn someone is handing out some sort of trinket or slick marketing swag.

After surviving the initial onslaught on our senses, DragonYoung and I set out to find the Diamond Select Toys booth.  We stumbled upon the DC Direct booth on the way and I snapped some quick pictures of the upcoming DC Minimates.

The most interesting item was Clayface, who appeared in both 2″ and 2.5″ form.  It’s hard to say what the display means, but I’m guessing a decision was made to either make him bigger or smaller.  Either way he looks fantastic, although I’m partial to the 2″ version.

After we found DST’s booth, I quickly set out to take pictures of any new Minimates.  Crowds gathered around the display cases and Chuck was busy handing out exclusives to the line of people at the cash register.

My pictures of the Wave 3 Star Trek turned out poorly, as the only thing my automatic focus would focus on were the figures with signs saying “NO PHOTOGRAPHY”.  I will try again, but from what I can tell the Minimates were based on the TV show and featured notable enemies like Khan and a Klingon.  I said “Wrath of Khan” in a post at the Minimate Multiverse, but after review I’m certain these are only from the TV show.  I am not the most versed in Star Trek, so I’m sure others will be able to confirm before the end of SDCC.

The flyer showing the AFX exclusive “Defenders” box set is pictured at the top.  Notably, the set contains Valkyrie, one of the lesser known Defenders characters.  This is great news for collectors who clamor for a diverse character line-up with their Minimates.

Fans will be happy to know that the exclusive Zombies two-pack featuring zombie Daredevil and zombie Giantman exhibits the same quality detail as the new DC Minimates.  Daredevil has a very detailed head, and his chest piece is clear plastic and paint.  The lack of paint in the center simulates the very large hole in his body from the comics.

Stay tuned for more coverage today!  Tonight at 5pm begins the Minimate Hunt and I will be on hand to give you updates and news!

Countdown to SDCC!

Posted on Wednesday 25 July 2007

By Jatta Pake

My brother, Dragonyoung, arrives shortly to join me going to the San Diego Comic Convention.  We are about three hours away not counting traffic, and Preview Night ends at 9pm.  We are going to try to make it!  If we do, look for pictures here around midnight Pacific time.

I plan to provide regular updates as we experience the Comicon so stay tuned.  I know a lot of Minimates fans cannot make it this year, so Dragonyoung and I will here to help you experience it!

More later …

DC Wave 4 Review - Wildcat and Golden Age Flash

Posted on Friday 20 July 2007

Wildcat and Golden Age Flash. Pic from DC Direct.

By Dragon

Wildcat

Design: Wildcat features his more current costume, which looks really nice in Minimate form. Interestingly, the mask is more like the ones we’ve seen in the Marvel Minimate collection than the ones in the DC collection. The DC masks have been full face masks with the character’s face painted onto the mask. Wildcat’s mask, however, offers the layered look but cutting out around the mouth of the character. It’s really well done and in my opinion looks much better than if they had painted a face onto a full face mask. Design: 5 out of 5

Attention to Detail: Wildcat’s detailing looks great. Individual strips of tape have been drawn around his wrists and even on his hands, which is something of a first for a Minimate. The chest detailing works very well on the darker colored figure, and the work on the face is phenomenal. The sculpting of the mask is impressive with the wrinkles and grooves that are etched into the plastic. The only downside is the lack of toes on the feet. The character is usually portrayed with claws on his feet, which are absent from the figure. Still, this is only a minor oversight and one that can easily be forgiven. Attention to Detail: 4.5 out of 5

Accessories: Wildcat comes with an additional hairpiece, which looks great on the figure. Wildcat comes with no weapons or other accessories, though given the character this figure is based off of, this does not seem to be an oversight, nor does it take away from the character in any way. Accessories: 5 out of 5

Parts Implementation: Wildcat features a unique piece in his mask, which was necessary, as nothing else existed up to this point that would have done the character justice. His hairpiece is a reuse of Aquaman’s hair, but this is no serious crime in that the figure didn’t have to come with hair at all. Parts Implementation: 5 out of 5

Overall: Wildcat is very well done, ranking amongst the best figures to grace the Minimate lineup. The implementation of the design and the high level of detail really help this figure excel.
Overall: 4.875 out of 5

Golden Age Flash

Design: As the name implies, Golden Age Flash is a representation of the original Flash from the “Golden Age” of comics. The design is well done, particularly on the large helmet. The lightning bolt on his chest is also well laid out. One thing to note, however, is the lack of wings on his boots. In all source art I could find for the character, the boots were always portrayed with wings, so their oversight here is rather odd. Design: 4 out of 5

Attention to Detail: Flash carries with him a high level of detail, as is the case with all the DC Minimates. The contrast between yellow and red on the chest is well done, as is the lines portraying the muscle structure. The hair that hangs out from the helmet features the white streaks worn by the character in this modern era. The neck is even flesh colored to match the small patch of skin showing at the top of his shirt. Even Flash’s belt has been reproduced with faithful skill. The only area in need of improvement is the before mentioned lack of wings on the boots. It just seems like one detail that should have been addressed in some fashion.
Attention to Detail: 4 out of 5

Accessories: Golden Age Flash comes with no accessories. Accessories: 0 out of 5…although considering that Flash’s power is his speed, and that he uses no weapons or tools, I can think of no accessory that would have benefited the character, other than perhaps some sort of blur effect that could attach to his feet, though I don’t know how they could have implemented such a thing. Adjusted Accessories: 5 out of 5

Parts Implementation: Flash comes with two unique sculpts in his helmet and his belt. The helmet is very character specific, but the belt seems like an interesting choice in new sculpts. There’s nothing overly specific about the design, and the lack of depth to the sculpt makes one wonder why it was made. Painting the belt on the waist would have achieved the same results. The boots are a reuse of Deathstroke’s boots from an earlier wave. Again, it’s an interesting choice, because Golden Age Flash’s boots should have wings on it. The use these boots would be less odd if they had painted wings on the boot at least, but I can’t help but think that the money spent sculpting the belt could have been better spent on more character specific footwear.
Parts Implementation: 3 out of 5

Overall: Overall, Golden Age Flash is fairly well implemented. The design is fairly accurate to the source material, but it overlooks a very character specific detail that hurts the overall image. The addition of a unique belt that wasn’t really necessary only further emphasizes the oversight on the part of the boots.
Overall: 4 out of 5

Final thoughts: The first few waves of the DC Minimate line really raised the bar with its attention to detail, high level of design, and decent amount of accessories mixed in. The choices in characters thus far have been well thought out, not focusing solely on the bigger names, but incorporating some lesser known characters as well. Still, this level of excellence can only last for so long, and I think this wave starts to show it. The character selection is top notch, but the design, detail, and extras are starting to settle into what I hope is the average for the line as a whole. This is still a good, strong wave and the design is still great, it just seems to be the first wave of the line where I’ve started to question some of the decisions made by the design team. Still, if this is as far as the series slumps, then we should look forward to a long, prosperous future with the DC line.
