A Little Too Quiet…

Daredevil III on the look-out for the latest Minimate news! Custom and pic by TENIME_art.

By Fujis

Things have slowed down since the end of Toy Fair and we are currently in-between release dates. I think this is what the expression “the calm before the storm” describes. The next Minimates to be released will most likely be the Target exclusive Spider-Man wave which would make sense considering the Mail-Away promotion that Art Asylum held along with Target. Offer fans some freebies and it should free up that shelf space! On that note, I imagine people should also be receiving their prizes pretty soon. Make sure to let us know what you got (especially if it’s whatever could possibly rhyme with ‘Jilver Biderman’) and don’t forget to drop AA a line and say thanks.

I’m at a loss as to what to write about since I’ve got more questions than answers. What’s happening with the Streetfighter 2 and i, Robot lines? What will Wasp’s head look like and is this a stepping stone to “Build-A-Figure” Minimates? And could there be more than one SDCC Minimates exclusive (assuming the Rosalyn/ Zarek 2-pack is indeed one of them)?

I suppose we’ll all just have to wait. In the meantime, how cool is the pic up top? The custom Daredevil was created by TENIME_art, one of the resident customizers at the Minimate Multiverse. He’s also created some wicked Transformers Minimates as well which you can see on his deviantART page here, in this thread, or over at Toy News International where they’re featured as this week’s Cool Custom of the Week!

And if you didn’t already know, the Minimate Multiverse is back online and better than ever. Get over there and check it out already!

MMMV is moving!

Posted on Friday 27 April 2007

The Minimate Multiverse is currently down and will be for most of the weekend as Ady is moving all of the content to a new host, server, and domain registrar. For those that don’t know, Ady is the man behind the curtain at the Multiverse and will be working tirelessly to ensure that the forum content makes it through the transfer. In the meantime, you can hang out here and check out our archives or pop over to Minimates Central. Danny will be reviewing some Cylons and DC Minimates soon I’m sure. There’s always the Art Asylum forums as well and don’t forget to check out the latest Minimates fan site - Minimates Ltd!

Best of luck with the transfer Ady and hopefully you’ll still have time for a pint or two this weekend!

Photoshop 101

Posted on Tuesday 24 April 2007

Or “How I learned to stop using MS Paint and love The Gimp!”

Superman Confidential #1 Minimate style by Lurch.

Lurch’s Laboratory: Photoshop 101!

By Lurch

I’ve been asked many things over the years on the minimate forums: why do they call you Lurch; what character is your favorite; why did C3 fail; do you have any spares; what movies are playing this week; etc, etc. (just for the record the answer to all of those is 42) Anyways, a majority of questions have been about the concept art and the comic covers, so I figured why not do some “how to” episodes of Lurch’s Laboratory.

First up one of the main questions, what program do you use? Well, I started using MS Paint; it was simple and already installed on my pc. As the designs got more intricate I needed something more, I was too cheap to buy Photoshop so ended up finding the GIMP.

Now for any design or cover the most important thing is good source art. You can find just about anything you want on the internet so finding source art is not too hard, the main thing to look for is good high quality detail (which usually means the larger file sizes). Once you have an idea of what to do and good source art you’re ready to start.

For this episode we’re going to go over a few different techniques for comic covers (why people ask me about these, I don’t know, I didn’t win anything in the contest). There are many different ways to create covers; the ones covered here are a simple 2 layer cover, a multi-layer cover, and one designed from scratch.

For the 2 layer cover I picked the covers of Superman Confidential #1 & #3. Now you could just take your picture of the minimate and paste it right on top of the character to cover it up, but that would be too easy and it doesn’t always cover the character underneath all the way. So the first step is to remove the character from the scene, using the erase tool I went around the character trying to leave a much of the background as possible. This helps for the next part to fill back in the area removed, as you can see you don’t have to make it look perfect or add a lot of detail. Just try to continue with the general colors and designs. For these covers I had to copy and paste from the surrounding area because the background had a texture that would have been hard to recreate if I just filled in the color. Next you need pictures of the minimate characters (picture1, picture2). I like to take pictures of them on a white background with as much light as possible; it makes it a lot easier to cut out the figure (picture1, picture2). I’ve tried using colors to match the cover background but you usually end up with not an exact match and get a color halo around your figure when you go to paste it on the cover background. So once you cut out around the figure, the only thing left is to resize it (for Superman I had to add a slight rotation to get in the correct position) and paste onto your cleaned up cover background. Once in position, check around for anything that needs to be touched up and voila … minimate comic cover. And here’s a before and after of the same #1 comic as a wallpaper.

Next, something a bit more challenging, a multi-layered cover; for this I chose Superman #205. As you can see on this cover, Superman needs to be in between the background and the bullets in the foreground. So what I did was take the cover and separate it into the different layers: background, foreground, and the logos. With the background I removed all the bullets, Superman & the logos and filled in with the general color and detail. For the foreground I used a picture that already had the logos removed and took out all the background detail. Then for the logos I just cut and paste them out from the cover. Once I had my picture of Superman, I cut him out, gave him a rotation to get in position and perspective to make his left side seem closer, and then pasted him on the background. I had to go back in and add some more detail to the background before adding the foreground. Finally the logos and there you go, Superman #205.

Last we have one designed from scratch. I’ve wanted to do this one for a while now so I picked Marvel Adventures Fantastic Four #23. First up I took the basic minimate designs and put them in position for the background. Then added some color and very minor details. Then, the fun part, added in the wall color and drawings. I tried to emulate most of the symbols from the comic, but had fun and added some stuff of my own. See if you can spot the references to Galactus, Silver Surfer, Dr Doom, Namor, Spider-Man, Puppet Master, Moleman, the Fantastic Four and also the Minimate Multiverse. Next I added a layer for the outlines of the stones, along with the imperfections. Then gave it a rotation and changed the perspective just a little bit so it looked like they were going up the corridor. Then I took my pictures of the minimates (pic1, pic2, pic3, pic4) and cut out around them (pic1, pic2, pic3, pic4); Mr. Fantastic needed some extra cut and pasting to get his arms in the right position. Then I pasted them on the background giving them some rotation too so they were walking up the corridor. Next I added a lighting effect to give the picture that Human Torch glow; and finally the logo at the bottom to finish it all up.

There you have it, next time we’ll do step-by-step on some concept designs and you can see I only do about half of the work. Anybody have any suggestions on what characters they would like to see designed?

DC Minimates Wave 3 Pics!

Posted on Wednesday 18 April 2007

The third wave of DC Minimates hit the pegs today and MINI-MYTE has posted detailed pics of them, in and out of the package, over at the Minimate Multiverse. Click here to check them out!

And here are some fun pics by Jatta Pake.  I tried to cover perspectives not shown by MINI-MYTE.

That’s an OMAC hand above.

I love the little fins on Aquaman.  He is definitely the star of the wave for me.

This is Booster Gold from Wave 2.  I meant to get this pic up last month.  Check out more Wave 2 pics on MINI-MYTE’s thread here.

Two years ago when C3 was cancelled, I never thought I’d ever see a Minimate Justice League of America.  DC Minimates had gotten me to read DC Comics for the first time in my life (at age 32 no less!).  I was crushed that my new love was departing before I even had a chance to know her that well.

But the faithful believed, Art Asylum toiled, and DC Direct smiled.  This will be remembered as a momentous day in Minimate history.  :)

By Fujis

I hate double posting on one day but this was too cool not to mention. On April 10th Marvel.com posted a close-up of the Battle Damaged Spider-Man that was the late comer to the recent reveal party. I can’t wait to see the movie and I can’t wait to get my hands on waves 17 & 18!

New Pics of the Star Trek Minimates

Posted on Sunday 15 April 2007

Kirk and Spock from the new 2″ Star Trek line. Pic from Play.com.

Play.com (UK) has the new Star Trek Minimate 2-packs available for preorder and they’ve posted some new pics as well. The detailing on these Minimates is superb - the gold on the uniforms and the accessories look top notch. I’m not completely sold on the Dress Uniform McCoy as the chase but then again I’m not much of Star Trek fan to begin with. As with the Battlestar Galactica line, I hope that DST makes some ships and playsets. These guys would look awesome displayed on an Enterprise bridge playset.

The Tick!

Posted on Saturday 14 April 2007

The Tick by Ian Mackey. Click to see a larger pic.

By Fujis

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I love the DAVE school. Not only did they create Batman: New Times and X-Men: Dark Tide but there seems to be an endless stream of Minimate-related images and even animated shorts that trickle out of their hallowed halls from time to time. The above image is one such example.

I found it on Ian Mackey’s deviantART page (which you can see here) and he was kind enough to answer a few questions that I had about the image and his involvement in the two aforementioned projects:

“I made it about two years ago in the first block at DAVE school for our first motion-capture animation assignment. Basically, we just had to pick a video clip, make a minimate model of the speaking character (I chose a cliip from the Tick live-action show), and lip-synch them saying it while an actor mo-caped their body animation. I did work on a little bit of X-Men, but only as a helper doing some lip-synching (my class was the one behind X-men, our big project was Runners).”

I would love to see the animation that this still is from but Ian mentioned that it’s long gone. I hope he’s able to dig it up and I hope that someone from Art Asylum has a soft spot for Big Blue and actively pursues the license. Surely a few Tick box sets would sell?
