The New Minimate 4-packs are at Mass…

The New Avengers and Astonishing X-Men 4-packs. Scan by Amazing JL.

By Fujis

People are starting to find the new Minimate 4-packs at Toys ‘R’ Us stores in America. Saint Demon, who broke the news on the Minimate Multiverse forum, told the minifanatics that sets had been found in Arizona by a Rebelscum member. No news as to whether these are being found in other countries although I imagine they will turn up at Toys ‘R’ Us stores in Canada in a few months and possibly in specialty shops in the UK.

So head to your local Toys ‘R’ Us for the triumphant return of Marvel minimates to big-box retail pegs and let us know where you found yours!

Night Viper’s Avatar Mayhem!

Minimate buttons/avatars by Night Viper.

By Fujis

Night Viper of Mini Mayhem, currently the only Minimate pic-fic in operation*, created these Minimate character drawings to use as ‘Previous’ and ‘Next’ buttons on his site. I also think they would make wicked avatars. If you do use one please let people know that it’s a Night Viper creation and send them over to his site!

*edit* I wrote and published this article before I found Miniville so Mini Mayhem isn’t the only pic-fic in operation although of the known pic-fics it does seem to have been updated most recently.

The Playmaker Toys logo and entire website content rolled into one.

By Fujis

Playmaker Toys seems to be a new player in the already densely populated and highly competitive toy industry. Perhaps a phoenix rising from the ashes of Palisades or a fledgling company trying to stake a claim it has been easier to unearth classified military documents than to gather info on this enigmatic arrival. Who is behind Playmaker Toys and, more importantly, what is their mandate? Where do they fit into the industry and what will they reveal in the coming months?

The only product that I can link to Playmaker Toys is one Slingshot Flying Monkey (pictured above). Perhaps their partnership with AA in the Kellogg’s Minimates line is their first foray into the action figure side of things?

The Kellogg’s Minimates line-up so far…

Playmaker Toys has certainly flexed their creative muscles when it comes to the Kellogg’s Minimates line usurping a long-held minimate edict. That’s right, the Kellogg’s minimates have fully sculpted heads and noses!

So who is Playmaker Toys? Only time will tell. And possibly someone with some hard facts. They might be able to tell us as well.

An Epic Minimate Webcomic

“I take a deep breath, wondering how all of this is going to go down.” Spider-Man from Frank Miller Presents: Ultimate Spider-Man.

By Fujis

I know I shouldn’t be surprised. I’ve only been writing for the HQ since April of this year but since I started generating content for the site I thought I had uncovered pretty much everything that was even remotely Minimate-related. Every once in a while something new will pop up but to miss something like this, well, I can’t believe I didn’t know about Miniville until now.

Since January of 2005 creators Burt Miller and Kevin Ireland have been steadily producing story after story and now this thing is ginormous (and that’s not a term I use lightly). Miniville is Odyssey-big. Lord of the Rings-big. Big-big. I’d write more but frankly, I haven’t even had a chance to read a full episode yet…I’m off to Miniville!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!

By Fujis

As soon as I saw Barry’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle control art I was worried. Worried because they looked so good, so accurate, so official that I knew I would have to spend some time clarifying the situation. So here goes…

This is the fourth installment of a monthly feature called It Came From the Basement in which Barry Bradfield (aka Basement #24) showcases his Minimate designs which focus primarily on characters from properties that Art Asylum doesn’t hold the rights to. Past issues have including hockey players, characters from Image’s Invincible, and a G.I. Joe box-set (all of which can be found under It Came From the Basement…in the Categories section).

And to clarify further since there has been some confusion in the past: I am not Basement #24. Basement #24 is the name of Barry’s website which features his artwork as well as an extensive catalogue of his past Minimate designs and it is also his handle over on the Minimate Multiverse forum. He was previously known as gra007 on one of the past incarnations of the Art Asylum forum where his Minimate designs first surfaced.

Man, full disclosure is exhausting!

Leonardo, Donatello, Michaelangelo, and Raphael by Basement #24.

So, unfortunately, the TMNT control art is not an official offering from Art Asylum or Mirage Studios but that doesn’t make it less awesome! These Turtles are kickin’ it old school thanks to Barry! I’m talking TMNT before they had different colored masks! That’s right, their masks were all red for a time but that was before Donatello became some kind of robot, before the regrettable decision to introduce a female Turtle, and before they became pizza-munching goofballs. This was the beginning. The time when the Turtles killed street thugs and members of the Foot without a second thought. When they hacked and slashed in black and white.

These 4 limited edition cold-cast statues can be assembled to depict the first group shot of the Turtles as they prepared to face off against the Purple Dragons (TMNT #1, May 1984). They are available to order here.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I loved the first two Ninja Turtle movies and the first cartoon show. But things started to fall apart after the abysmal TMNT III movie. Then there was the equally disasterous live-action television series The Next Mutation. And to be honest, there have been so many restarts of the series in comic book form that I stopped keeping track. Image’s version, which thankfully only made it to the 23rd issue (if I remember correctly), was awful and the latest incarnation by Dreamwave was alright, made only slightly better by the unreal pencils of LeSean, but due to poor sales the series was cancelled after the seventh issue and Dreamwave has since folded.

Dreamwave’s TMNT #1 (June 2003). Cover by LeSean and Rob Ruffolo.

I think the Turtles suffered from overages in the past: over-licensing, over-markerting, just plain ol’ overexposure, which would explain the absence of the turtles from the toy shelves and television screens in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. But there is something undeniably powerful about this green, fighting foursome. And they have certainly fought there way back into the mainstream media. I doubt this second coming will be as overwhelming as the first but now the kids who loved the Turtles are in their late twenties or early thirties and have extra cash to burn. Perhaps this is the perfect time for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Minimates.

As I said, I would love to see classic incarnations of the Turtles in Minimate form but newer versions representing the characters as they are to be depicted in the CGI movie due in 2007 are far more likely. Likely that is if Art Asylum purseus this property which I think is doubtfull, despite it’s lucrative possibilties. They have their hands full with Marvel, DC, Ghost Rider, Battlestar Galactica, Speed Racer, Streetfighter, Rocky and Kellogg’s. Adding another property to the mix might just bring the machine to a grinding halt.

An early poster of Leonardo from Warner Bros. upcoming TMNT movie (which is tentatively called Immortal).

I, for one, have my fingers crossed that Adam, Digger, or maybe even Chuck at DST have a soft-spot for the Turtles and that we might see these figures in the years to come. Hmm, the only thing I’m worried about now is what I’m going to occupy myself with before the new movie comes out…

Cowabunga!

Minimate Masterpiece Theatre

Minimate Masterpiece Theatre poster. Photo by Crimson Monkey.

By Fujis

I’m always surprised when I stumble across something Minimate-related that I haven’t seen before, especially since I’m always looking for interesting pics and links to update the site with.

I thought I knew about all of the remaining Minimate pic-fics out there. The only two which can still be viewed are Mini Mayhem (which is the only remaining Minimate pic-fic which still gets regular updates) and Minimate Madness (which is updated infrequently). Donny B’s Minimate Adventures is on hiatus but he has mentioned an impending relaunch and the two other main ones that I know of, minimadnesses and TNI’s Desktop Theater, seem to be gone (although finding anything on TNI’S site seems difficult).

So imagine my surprise when I came upon Crimson Monkey’s Minimate Masterpiece Theatre. MMT has twelve episodes (the twelfth being listed on the Home page) along with Valentine’s Day and Election Specials as well as a few gems, namely an interview with Picard about the ol’ Art Asylum Collector’s Club and a link to a contest that Dave started called the AACC Background Contest - you might even recognize the names of a few of the participants!

It will be difficult, trust me!

A huge thank you to Ady and the admin team for mounting such a wonderful contest! It attracted a wide variety of artists and styles and most importantly I think people had fun and possibly even learned something during the creation process. I know I did! Did you know that if you save a file in .PSD format in Adobe Photoshop that it doesn’t merge all of your layers? Well, I didn’t!

What are you still doing here: go and check out the gallery!

Holy Stop-Motion, Batman!

“You wouldn’t punch a guy wearing glasses wouldja?”

Nate “Blunty” Burr of Bluntmation.com usually uses Lego figs for his stop-motion work but he has also created a couple of shorts using minimates. They are Batman? (based on a short by Crank Yankers) which also has a time-lapsed “making of” feature, there’s also Depressed Bruce (A public service announcement gone wrong) and the aptly named Animation Test: Bruce Lee. Check ‘em out!

Cylon-o-Mania!

A toaster playing a trick on good ol’ Starkiller. Original image by Willy Logan.

By Fujis

The original Battlestar Galactica series was a little before my time so I have to confess that I have no idea who or what the Classic Black Centurion is. Although calling him “classic black” makes him sound like a restored muscle car.

This Darth Vader clone will be part of the Classic Cylon case assortment that DST is releasing in limited numbers. We haven’t had official confirmation yet but it looks like a case will contain 12 figures meaning there will be 12,000 Cylons released in total - 6000 from each show (Classic and Modern). The figure ratios are still anyone’s guess.

The cool cats at Stuckakid have made it clear that they will have opened figures available for purchase (if these are indeed blind-packaged) and they will also be accepting preorders for cases starting next week. The seller’s suggested retail price for a case is $60 but Xybot (one half of the Stuckakid posse) has said that they will be selling cases for less than that, although he didn’t say by how much.

Projected to be released in December you’ll be able to stuff some stockings with these tiny, menacing machines. And in the new year your Cylon army will be prepped and ready to take on the first waves of BSG humans. Oh the poor humans, did anyone warn them that there are 12,000 toasters?!
